Welcome to
lumerity.net
lumerity.net is a new service designed to help you keep an
eye on things when you're not there. The Lumerity monitoring kit and
web service let you see any indoor location where you have an
always-on Internet connection and a mains power supply.
How it works
We supply you with the Lumerity monitoring kit (a
plug
computer plus a
camera). Here is a picture of the kit (the ruler is there for scale,
it's not part of the kit):
You install the kit at your location by plugging in the cables
and pointing the camera. You don't need tools or computer expertise.
You're free to move the kit to another location at any time. You can
also give it away or sell it - you own it outright.
Once installed, the kit takes a routine picture every sixty
seconds and uploads the picture to lumerity.net (this site). Provided
your Internet connection is good, the kit uploads each picture as soon
as it's taken and your picture is safely on lumerity.net's server 5-10
seconds after being taken.
Pictures on the server are available for viewing for 10 days.
Any time before then you can save a picture to your own computer by
using your browser ("Save Image As..." in Firefox, for example).
Please note, while we endeavour to keep the service working, we
cannot warrant any particular level of reliablity, due to network
outages, power outages, bugs in software, illness, accidents or other
reasons.
A couple of sample pictures taken by the kit:
Click an image to see it at full size (640x480 pixels).
From anywhere in the world where you have access to the Internet,
you can log into your account at lumerity.net and view your pictures.
Please note, due to its technical deficiencies, Microsoft
Internet Explorer does not work for viewing pictures at lumerity.net.
Motion detection
The kit also detects motion. Once it sees motion, it takes a picture
every two seconds until the motion stops, uploading each picture as
it's taken.
There is a maximum, however: it won't upload more than 90 motion
pictures (three minutes' worth) in any ten minute period. This is to
contain bandwidth costs and make the service affordable as widely as
possible.
Please note, we call them 'motion pictures' to distinguish them
from the routine every-minute snapshots; all the pictures from the
kit are still-pictures, not video.
Motion alerts
As a lumerity.net customer, you can supply an email address for motion
alerts. Then lumerity.net will send you an alert when your kit
uploads a motion picture. Motion monitoring starts two minutes after
the kit turns on (or after you reconnect the camera).
Once we send you an alert, we 'go quiet' for 30 minutes, so that
you won't be bombarded by our alerts if the motion continues. Once
the 30 minutes is up, the next motion detection will cause another
alert.
If your Internet goes out
If your Internet connection goes out, the kit will start saving up
the pictures that it would normally upload to lumerity.net. When your
Internet service returns, the kit will resume uploading the pictures.
The kit has limited storage space, so it will accumulate a
maximum of 30 MB (megabytes) of pictures. Typically that means around
eight or nine hundred pictures. Once it reaches the 30MB limit the
kit starts deleting pictures, the oldest first, to free up space for
new pictures.
